Cumberland County Civil War History Notes

Cumberland County: A Union Stronghold Amidst Turmoil

Cumberland County, located in the southern part of New Jersey, played a significant role during the Civil War. Contrary to the stereotype of a northern state, this county was a staunch Union stronghold. It's essential to remember that the war was not merely a battle between North and South, but a conflict that raged within the hearts of communities.

Cumberland County was home to brave individuals who fought valiantly to preserve the Union. As Matthew Crocker, a history professor at Keene State College in New Hampshire, asserts, "no part of N.J. was ever thought of being south of the Mason-Dixon Line." Yet, the commitment of its residents to the Union cause demonstrated that the Civil War's impact transcended geographical boundaries.
